GRANTS FOR 2017 / 2018

Since 2001, the Committee for the History of Electricity has three objectives focused on the history of electricity: to conduct or foster scientific research, to study and promote tangible and intangible heritage, and to share and impart knowledge.

In 2013, the Committee widened its scope to become the Committee for the History of Electricity and Energy.
The Committee for the History of Electricity and Energy offers grants varying from 1,500 to 3,000 euros to graduate students.

Applications can be written in French or English.

Selection will be based on the following criteria: originality of the subject, preparation and quality of presentation of the project. The project must deal, at least partly, with the history of electricity or energy in France, Europe or elsewhere in the world.

Payment of the grant will be conditional upon signature of an agreement. The thesis or dissertation may be written in the language chosen by the student. However, a summary in French or English must be submitted to the Committee for the History of Electricity and Energy for theses or dissertations written in any other language.

The application should include:
– the attached application form;
– a letter in which the candidate requests a grant, gives the precise subject of his/her research, as defined with his/her supervisor, and binds him/herself to respect the agreement if he/she is selected;
– a presentation of the research project mentioning the sources, the methodology, the questions to be raised, and a short bibliography (6-10 p.);
– a detailed curriculum vitae;
– a letter of recommendation from the research supervisor, appreciating the candidate and approving the project;
– a photocopy of the student card or an attestation of research delivered by the university or research centre with which the candidate is affiliated.

The application must be sent attached to an email stating the name, the forename, the postal address, the phone number and the email address of the candidate. It must be emailed by November 10, 2017.

Depuis 2001, le Comité d’histoire de l’électricité a pour mission de conduire et de susciter des recherches scientifiques, d’étudier et de valoriser le patrimoine matériel et immatériel, de partager et de communiquer les savoirs sur l’histoire de l’électricité.

En 2013, le Comité a élargi son champ d’intervention pour devenir le Comité d’histoire de l’électricité et de l’énergie. Il poursuit ses actions de soutien dans le domaine de l’histoire et du patrimoine de l’électricité et de l’énergie et contribue à sa diffusion auprès de tous les publics. Le Comité d’histoire de l’électricité et de l’énergie soutient les travaux d’étudiants en sciences humaines sur l’électricité et l’énergie à travers un programme sélectif de soutiens financiers à la recherche dont le montant est compris entre 1500 et 3000 euros.

Nous attirons l’attention des professeurs et des candidats sur les critères de sélection et de classement des dossiers qui seront les suivants : originalité du sujet, sérieux de la préparation de la recherche, qualité de la présentation du dossier.

Le dossier de candidature devra être rédigé en anglais ou en français.

Les sujets acceptés devront porter, au moins partiellement, sur l’histoire de l’électricité, ou plus généralement de l’énergie, en France, en Europe ou ailleurs dans le monde. Le versement des sommes est soumis au respect d’une convention d’études signée dès l’obtention du soutien financier. Le soutien donnera lieu à la rédaction d’un mémoire pour les masters ou d’une thèse pour les doctorants qui pourront être rédigés dans la langue du choix de l’étudiant. Néanmoins, ces travaux devront tous être accompagné d’un résumé en français ou en anglais.

Les dossiers comprendront les documents suivants attachés à un courriel indiquant les nom, prénom, adresse, coordonnées téléphoniques et électroniques du candidat :

Research Fellow (Distributed Ledgers and Decentralised Energy in Sub Saharan Africa)

Working in Kenya, Tanzania and/or Uganda you will use ethnographic, human centred, participatory and collaborative methods to document and analyse the data practices of pay-as-you-go solar energy companies and customers to understand how data on the generation and consumption of solar energy is produced, transacted, valued and trusted. You will have an appropriate degree, normally a PhD, in social anthropology, politics or human geography, and typically two years relevant research experience including field based qualitative research on the digital economy in East Africa.

This full time, fixed term post is available for 35 hours per week from January 2018 for 16 months.

Job description

The post-doctoral researcher will be part of a dynamic research environment with a long track record in energy studies and in which historical studies are seamlessly integrated with studies with a more present-day focus.

Funded by the STandUp for Energy-strategic research programme (www.standupforenergy.se), the post-doc will further play an important part in strengthening the historical and societal dimension of KTH’s energy-oriented research.

The post-doc will carry out research about the history of energy supply. Within this broad frame, the post-doc will have considerable flexibility in defining his or her own research focus.

The post-doc may also be asked to participate, on a smaller scale (10-20%), in teaching and tasks of a more administrative character.


The successful applicant holds a PhD in history, STS, innovation studies or a related field. The PhD degree shall have been obtained within the last three years. Very good English skills are a must, since the post-doc will be working in a multi-cultural research environment and will be expected to publish in English. Earlier experience with energy-historical research is a plus.

Placement of 20 energy-SSH early-stage researchers into 10 Horizon 2020 energy projects

Social Sciences and Humanities for Advancing Policy in European Energy (SHAPE-ENERGY) is a €2m investment through the EU Horizon 2020 programme. Specifically, it represents a new European platform for energy-related social sciences and humanities (energy-SSH). Energy-SSH has played less of a role to date in shaping (European) energy policy than Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In funding this project, the European Commission is supporting better integration of energy-SSH into the policy process. SHAPE-ENERGY is running for two years (from 1 February 2017), and is co-ordinated by the Global Sustainability Institute, Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge, UK).

Through the ESR programme, ENTPE will manage the placement of 20 energy-SSH early-stage researchers into 10 Horizon 2020 energy projects. Working in pairs (2 researchers per project) they will support the project coordinators, over 2-4 week placements, to identify ways in which SSH can be embedded in their remaining deliverables.

These placements are an opportunity for host and interns to reflect on how to help social sciences and humanities work become embedded into existing energy initiatives to maximise impact.

PhD researchers could for example:

  • undertake additional analysis of collected data;
  • reach out to SSH researchers who may be interested in the project;
  • interview project partners to help evaluate the project;
  • assist with events, and talk to stakeholders about their engagement with the project;
  • attend consortium meetings, and observe cross-partner working.

The 20 placements will take place between September and December 2017. Travel bursaries (1.030€ for travel & accommodation) will be provided to facilitate the involvement of ESRs. It is still time to apply and several European projects on energy are waiting for contact to work with PhD students in SHS!

The Global Sustainability Institute (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK) is looking to recruit a new permanent Research Fellow, who will bring a strong portfolio of research to complement the existing work of our collaborative and interdisciplinary institute. Whilst the post-holder will join at Research Fellow level, the career ladder will allow for subsequent progressions to Senior Research Fellow, Principal Research Fellow/Reader, and Professor. Since the GSI was established in 2011, it has built a reputation for high impact publications across a broad range of sustainability issues. We are part of the £6m ESRC Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity, have won grants from five of the seven UK research councils (ESRC, EPSRC, AHRC, BBSRC, NERC), are currently leading three EU projects (e.g. SHAPE ENERGY) as well as contributing to others (e.g. MEDEAS), and also received recognition for world-leading research and impact in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The GSI has three research themes (Consumption & Change; Education for Sustainability; Global Risk & Resilience), and the new post-holder will have the opportunity to work within, across and/or between these themes. The backgrounds of our academic staff are diverse and encompass economics, geography, international relations, psychology, sociology, science and technology studies, environmental social science, climate change, mathematics and computer modelling.

SHAPE ENERGY Research Design Challenge

Control, Change and Capacity-Building in Energy Systems

European and worldwide energy policy and research are largely influenced by knowledge and disciplines from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Yet the challenges energy transitions entail concern social patterns as well, like individual or organisational behaviour and their management. These issues are covered by energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (energy-SSH) disciplines. In fact, according to the European Commission (EC) Horizon2020 work programme on energy, knowledge from numerous fields of research is necessary to realise the ambitious goals of energy transitions concerning emissions reductions, renewable energy shares and the concomitant changes in social organisation. In what ways different energy-SSH disciplines design a research challenge related to overarching energy research problems is the objective of this call. Ultimately, it aims at inferring consequences for multi- and interdisciplinary energy-SSH research that serves both the academic and energy policy community.

Therefore, the SHAPE ENERGY platform, represented herein by the partner institution Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), invites European SSH researchers to take part in our ‘Research Design Challenge’. This challenge contains three sub-challenges framed as social science research problems on energy relating to control, change and capacity-building in energy systems (see below). The Research Design Challenge is an attempt to deepen our understanding of interdisciplinarity by analysing how different social sciences and humanities disciplines research the same scientific problem. Across multiple SSH disciplines, up to 15 teams of at least 2 researchers from at least 2 European countries will be selected and funded with up to 2.500 Euros to foster collaboration (funded to cover travel to meet up). In the wake of current EC initiatives, applications to this call for abstracts could be, among others, appealing for researchers who plan on follow-up applications with H2020 or EU-related programmes like COST or Marie Skłodowska-Curie, for instance. We seek your application for an eventual 3.000-4.000 words paper on one of these challenges if you are researching in one of the following SSH disciplines: Business; Communication Studies; Criminology; Demography; Development; Economics; Environmental social science; Education; Gender; History; Human geography; Law; Linguistics/languages; Philosophy; Planning (architecture); Politics; Psychology; Science/tech studies; Sociology; Social anthropology; Social innovation; Social policy; Theology. However we note that it is fine to include SSH disciplines from outside this list.  


For the Research Design Challenge, we are interested in your theories, methods and approaches to an energy related research problem from your disciplinary point of view (see list above to qualify). The prerequisite is that you find at least one more partner (individual[s] from European academic institution[s]) from a different European country (H2020 eligible countries) to collaborate on the challenge. The challenge itself is kept relatively general in order for many potential researches being able to connect to it. They relate to the overarching research problems of control, change and capacity-building in energy systems from a social science and humanities perspective (concept and concomitant challenges based on: Büscher/Sumpf 2015, see website download for details). Please consider the following three sub-challenges to relate to:

  • Challenge A:  From your (disciplinary) point of view, how would you approach the (research and real-world) problem of control in future energy systems? What theories and methods would you apply to research this problem? What approaches would you suggest to act upon this problem?
  • Challenge B:  From your (disciplinary) point of view, how would you approach the (research and real-world) problem of stability and change toward future energy systems? What theories and methods would you apply to research this problem? What approaches would you suggest to act upon this problem?
  • Challenge C: From your (disciplinary) point of view, how would you approach the (research and real-world) problem of capacity-building, i.e. fostering the actions necessary to realise consumer involvement? What theories and methods would you apply to research this problem? What approaches would you suggest to act upon this problem?

Weekly Energy News Update-September 2nd

Indeed that was a looong break. I won’t be able to catch up with all the major headlines over the past month but will have a highlights section below before digging into this weeks most recent headlines.

I am still on a trip across the US, this time from Montana to Boston. I have to share one tidbit from the journey. While driving through Cleveland I realized that I had never actually seen the waters of Lake Erie (or Ontario…but I did that two days later, now I’ve seen all the Great Lakes). I needed to get gas and take a break after about 3.5 hours of non-stop driving. I decided that Conneaut, the last town in Ohio while heading East on I-90, would be best, as it had a little harbor area where I could walk around. After noticing that the harbor water was not in the best condition for “feet-dipping”, I began to return to my car and saw this (sorry about the angle):

This was a first for me. Luckily, a local woman was hanging out on a bench by the harbor; I had to ask. She told me that the wind turbine had been struck by lightening years before leaving some damage. The company patched it up, but then in recent months during a very strong storm, the turbine was struck by lightening again and the wind blew the damaged blade right off of the turbine. According to her there was a renewed debate within the community about whether or not to repair the blade, but apparently many people were upset with the local family who had it installed on their property in the first place. I was able to find a number of local news articles about the issue and it appears the situation has placed the town in quite the bind as they signed a 10 year contract to allow energy generation at the site until 2020. Repairs may require the town to extend that contract.

Conneaut wind turbine facing uncertain future (Star Beacon)

My feeling is that Conneaut is a fairly typical “rust belt” town with many factories and even department stores that have been completely shutdown for many years. Even the old public library, which still bears the Rockefeller name, was boarded up and displayed small tags of graffiti here and there. The woman I talked to expressed surprise when I told her I was just driving through. “No one ever stopped here in the past,” she said. “Now with the internet, were getting on the map, people are starting to notice there’s a beach down the way and stop for a short visit. But in the past no one used to do that.” Perhaps the town will try to draw on tourism to support their future, but I cannot imagine a stalled wind turbine with a blown-up blade will be their seaside attraction.

I have tried to collect a number of articles about Harvey that are most directly related to energy; Democracy Now has in particular been recording a number of very critical pieces that I have been listening to on the radio while driving. I just want to note, that Arkema Inc.’s refusal to provide transparent information regarding their chemicals is very disturbing and reminds me of the lack of transparency in the aftermath of the massive explosion in Tianjin China in 2015 that killed 173 people.
